Engineering and architecture careers are traditionally well-paid professions. The BLS reports the median annual wages in 2008 were $74,020 for environmental engineers, $97,400 for computer hardware engineers, and $70,320 for architects.

Engineering and Architecture Career Outlook

The BLS predicts that overall engineering employment will rise by 11 percent between 2008 and 2018. The engineering fields with the highest predicted rates of growth are in biomedicine, civil engineering, industrial engineering, and environmental engineering (a predicted 31 percent rise in jobs). Jobs for architects are predicted to rise by 16 percent during the same decade.
