Unknown Employers Dominate Entry Level Hiring
65% of College Grad Job Seekers Find Jobs with Companies They Had Never Heard Of Previously
MILWAUKEE, WI--September 19, 2006--In a recent survey, CollegeGrad.com, the #1 entry level job site found that 65% of college grads who have already landed their first job, had never heard of their employer before they started their job search. Only 35% were familiar with their new employer before beginning their job search.
So how do job seekers find out about hiring employers? Expanding your network is the key, according to Brian Krueger, President of CollegeGrad.com. "Dont just go after the brand name employers. Explore all of the opportunities available to entry level job seekers. Search online for the best position fit. The employer name may surprise you."
While some entry level job seekers are focused primarily on working for Fortune 500 brand name employers, those who are hired at smaller to medium-sized companies often find themselves with expanded responsibilities in areas they may not otherwise have been exposed to. For example, a communications major may end up designing ad campaigns, writing press releases, and performing customer service tasks, all under the umbrella of a marketing position.
"It's an ideal way to expand your early career skills," said Krueger. "Employers are interested in well balanced employees who can step into a variety of developmental roles throughout their career. Someone who has a working knowledge in a variety of areas becomes a very attractive future promotion candidate."
College grad job seekers can check out who's hiring by reviewing CollegeGrad.com's list of Top Entry Level Employers at: www.CollegeGrad.com/topemployers. While many employers on the list are brand names, there are also plenty of lesser known employers. And large or small, they are all hiring entry level college grads.
Following are the overall survey results:
Those already working in your first job--had you ever heard of your new employer before you started your job search?
- Yes 35.1%
- No - 64.9%
The survey was conducted nationally using an online poll placed on the CollegeGrad.com home page during August 2006. The results are based on approximately 550 respondents.
